How do deposits work?Generally all scooter rentals in Thailand require a deposit to cover potential damages during the rental period. Typically these deposits are held by the shops themselves. However this has led to a widespread practice of deposit scams and extortion of renters through fraudulent deposit claims, pre-existing damage claims & exorbitant repair costs. Skoot fixes this. Skoot holds your deposit in escrow for the duration of the rental to entirely remove these problems from the rental experience. Should damage occur, the Skoot Partner must submit a claim to Skoot for any deposit money. Skoot will initiate a case, verify the damage, confirm the damages with you the renter, review supporting evidence such as before and after photos, then make a decision. If a deposit claim is warranted, we will review all repair costs, damage photos, parts lists, labor rates and generally make sure the agreed upon solution is fair for everyone. This is a key selling point of Skoot and why many renters choose to rent through us.

Do I need to provide my passport? No. You will need to provide a photo of your passport during ID verification, but it is not required by the shop. Some renters prefer to leave a passport instead of a deposit. For shops that offer this option, you'll choose 'Passport Hold' or 'Deposit' at time of checkout. As such you will not be charged the deposit amount during payment. Upon pickup or delivery of the scooter, you will be required to surrender your passport for the duration of the rental. Failure to surrender your passport will result in immediate booking cancellation subject to the Skoot Cancellation Policy. Your passport will be returned to you at the end of the booking.

Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP)?An IDP is not required to create a booking on the platform. Each Skoot Partner Shop will indicate if an IDP is required on the listing page for each scooter. You will see a yellow badge indicating this requirement shown here: If there is no yellow badge, an IDP is not required to rent this scooter. Ultimately you are responsible for your own legal eligibility to operate a vehicle in a foreign country.

Is there insurance coverage? All scooters on Skoot are required to have current annual license and registration to be eligible for listing on the platform. As a part of this registration, insurance coverage is included however it is limited to bodily injury coverage and accidental death and dismemberment. There is no insurance company operating in Thailand that will provide coverage to damage of the scooter itself to rental company scooters. If a shop offers this coverage, they are either filing fraudulent claims under personal coverage policies, selling you the personal coverage policies themselves for which rental bikes are ineligible or offering in-house unlicensed "insurance" products for which there is no guarantee of payment. That being said all Skoot scooters provide up to 30,000 THB bodily injury coverage for the driver and up to 80,000 THB total bodily injury coverage for riders as a part of this compulsory registration insurance. These amounts are enough to cover most minor injuries typical with minor crashes. Lastly it is worth noting that international medical insurance & travel insurance policies are typically limited to 50cc scooters and under (which eliminates 99% of rental scooters). Additionally these policies usually require an international motorcycle license or local motorcycle license to pay a claim. Read the fine print.
