If you plan to rent a scooter in Thailand, the legal answer is unambiguous: you need an International Driving Permit (IDP) with a motorcycle endorsement, issued in your home country before you arrive. Your home driving license alone is not valid. Your car license is not valid for a motorbike — even a 110cc scooter.

What is an IDP?

An IDP is a translation booklet issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. It is not a license on its own — it's a supplement to your home license that Thai police can read. You carry both.

How to get one (takes 5 minutes in most countries)

  • US: AAA or AATA. ~$20, issued same day over the counter.
  • UK: Post Office branches. £5.50, issued on the spot. Ask for the 1949 Convention version.
  • Germany: ADAC or your local Führerscheinstelle. €15–20.
  • Netherlands: ANWB. €24.
  • Australia: AAA state clubs (NRMA, RACV, etc). ~A$45.

Bring a passport-style photo, your current license, and a few dollars. Ask explicitly for the motorcycle category (usually "A" or "A1").

But my home license already says I can ride a motorcycle

Doesn't matter. Thai police enforce the IDP requirement because without it they can't read your license. If you crash, your travel insurance will void the claim for riding without a legally recognized license — and that is the part that bankrupts people.

What happens if you ride without one?

Two things. First: police checkpoints in Phuket (Patong, Kata, Chalong), Chiang Mai (Nimman area), and Samui (Lamai, Chaweng) fine tourists 500 THB(about $14) for riding without a valid license. It's a formality — pay, ride on. Second and much worse: if you have an accident, your insurance denies the claim. A broken leg in a Thai hospital is $5,000+ out of pocket. A serious head injury is $50,000+.

The 1968 IDP catch

Some countries (notably Brazil, Vietnam, and a few others) issue IDPs under the 1968 Vienna Convention instead of the 1949 Geneva Convention. Thailand only recognizes 1949 Geneva. If your country issues both, ask specifically for the 1949 version.

What about a Thai driving license?

If you're staying longer than a month, the Department of Land Transport (DLT) issues Thai motorcycle licenses to tourists with a valid non-immigrant visa or certificate of residence. The process takes a full day and involves a theory test in English. For a 2-week trip, don't bother — just get the IDP.

Does Skoot check this?

Yes. When you verify your ID in the Skoot app, we ask you to upload your driving license. Verified shops are instructed to check it at pickup. We do not rent to anyone without an endorsement that covers motorbikes.

It takes two minutes and a $20 trip to your auto club. Do it before you fly.
